Chapter 7

Kyle

Like most storms this time of year at the shore, there wasn’t any snow in the forecast. Just heavy wind and rain and the ocean in a rage. Hopefully all the small craft had returned to the docks, or the local Coast Guard station would soon be overwhelmed with rescue operations.

By the time they entered the house, the wind was whipping at them. They carried the bags in, the emergency supplies from the local store as well as pizza for dinner. James had insisted that pizza was an absolute requirement for emergency supplies, and Kyle wasn’t about to argue. They could always stash any leftovers in one of the large deck boxes, and it would stay cold enough. The Russells had always insisted that cold pizza for breakfast was one of the major food groups. Kyle set out the pizza and put away the bottled water and a few of the other food items they had picked up. James had gone to distribute flashlights and make sure all the electronics and battery packs were being charged.

Just then his phone pinged with a slew of texts:

Mom R: Kyle, Be safe and stay warm and dry!

Maria: None of that safe biz. Take a chance! But stay warm!

James: I promise to keep Kyle warm.

Oh. My. God. Kyle looked up as James entered the room chuckling to himself, phone in hand. “What the fuck?” Kyle asked, his pulse racing. Keep Kyle warm? What madness had entered the family chat tonight?

“Pizza!” James cried out. He stole the piece from Kyle’s hand and took a big bite. He then looked at Kyle and smirked. His phone buzzed again, and Kyle looked down.

Mom R: James Evan Russell, you behave yourself.

Maria: The full name! You’re in trouble, bro.

James: Hey, I got us some nice warm pizza. Don’t blame me for your sewer brain, Mom.

Dad R: Point to James. Now leave the poor kids alone and let them get set for the night.

James continued to eat Kyle’s slice of pizza as he grabbed himself a beer and sat down across from Kyle.

“It’s amazing how good this pizza is. I crave this stuff even when I’m in New York,” James said.

“Um, yeah, it’s good. But you know, only when I actually have some,” Kyle groused.

“Oh, no whining. Here.” James handed him another slice and a paper plate.

“That was a perfectly fair complaint with no whining involved. Damn, this always tastes amazing. I liked Romero’s, though, too. Do you remember that place?”

“Duh. The full-on raid that went down there when we were on our way to go play Skee-ball is embedded in my brain. I don’t think I ever saw that many cop cars before.”

“And Maria was so upset that we couldn’t get pizza there that night,” Kyle said, relaxing as they spoke about comfortable topics.

“I thought the cop was going to go into shock when she marched right up to him and demanded that he open the place up for her.”

Kyle barked out a laugh. “Yeah, well, at least she didn’t have her field hockey stick that time.
